On January 31, 2024, the Office of the Extension Division conducted a visit to Sitio Lunao, Brgy. Sungay, Alubijid, Misamis Oriental, as part of the collaborative project "Responding to COVID-19 Challenges for the AANR Sector: A NOMCAARRD Initiative." The primary objective of this visit was to assess the progress and status of the Sungay-Lunao Upland Barangay Sungay Farmer’s Harvest Association, Inc. (SLUBSFHA) and their tilapia farming endeavors.
During the visit, Dr. Aida D. Perpetua, Lyndon L. Roa, and Emee P. Eballe engaged in discussions with the LGU Alubijid Office of Agricultural Services and the Sungay Barangay Council, aiming to strengthen partnerships for the successful implementation of the project. Additionally, the group had the opportunity to converse with SLUBSFHA members to determine how MSU at Naawan could provide optimal support through a needs assessment.
Despite facing challenges, SLUBSFHA has demonstrated proactive measures to protect their tilapia population from bird predation, particularly from kingfishers, by ingeniously crafting a protective covering using coconut leaves. Furthermore, with the steadfast support of the Barangay Council, they are poised to acquire a net to further enhance the security of their pond.
The highlight of the visit was the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between MSU at Naawan and SLUBSFHA, symbolizing mutual dedication to the objectives and sustainability of the project. This milestone underscores the commitment of both parties to work collaboratively towards achieving the project's goals.
