The Mindanao State University at Naawan, through the Gender and Development (GAD) Office in partnership with the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), successfully held the activity entitled “Silent Expressions: A Sign Language Seminar-Workshop for MSUN Frontline Personnel, GAD Focal Point System, and IPDM Committee” on August 29, 2025 at the MSU Naawan – MESC Conference Room.
This event was organized in celebration of Persons with Disability (PWD) Day and was also integrated into the observance of MSU System Peace Day. The activity sought to provide meaningful opportunities for MSUN frontline personnel to acquire basic knowledge and skills in sign language, equipping them to communicate more effectively with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. By fostering better communication and understanding, the workshop highlighted the University’s commitment to building an inclusive, peaceful, and people-centered academic community.
The seminar-workshop was enriched through the expertise of the resource speaker, Ms. Chyrel B. Racines, PWD Welfare Focal and Sign Language Trainer of PDAO–Opol. Her insights and practical exercises enabled participants to appreciate the importance of non-verbal communication and its role in empowering persons with disability.
This initiative is aligned with the mandates of the Magna Carta of Women and the commitment of MSU Naawan to peacebuilding and inclusivity. By integrating the celebration of PWD Day with the MSU System Peace Day, the University reaffirms that peace is best realized when every individual, regardless of ability, is given equal access to opportunities, respect, and meaningful participation in community life.
The GAD Office and IPDM extend their gratitude to the MSU Naawan Administration, participants, partners, and offices that supported this endeavor. Together, we take another step forward in breaking barriers, promoting understanding, and strengthening the culture of peace and inclusivity within and beyond the University.
