From November 26 to 29, 2024, the E-GeMSS Project team, led by Dr. Fiona L. Pedroso, conducted a series of field activities in Taguines Lagoon, Barangay Benoni, Mahinog, Camiguin. These efforts were part of the ongoing initiative to enhance green mussel seedstocks and support the local aquaculture industry.
The activities began on November 26, with a productive meeting with Vice Mayor Nerio Y. Galochino and Mr. Florido Labalan, president of the local fisheries organization. During the meeting, the team formally sought permission to conduct a survey and install partial spat collectors in the Taguines Lagoon. Their approval and support underscored the importance of collaboration with local leaders in achieving sustainable aquaculture practices.
On November 27, the team conducted a courtesy call with Barangay Captain Asterio A. Mabale Jr. of Barangay Benoni to formally inform him about the planned survey and installation of spat collectors. Following this, the team conducted a thorough survey of the local mussel farm within the Taguines Lagoon. This assessment aimed to evaluate the site’s aquaculture conditions and identify the most suitable locations for the installation of spat collectors.
The following day, November 28, the team returned to Barangay Benoni to interview fisherfolk and collect demographic data. This engagement provided essential insights into the socio-economic context of the community, helping to align the project’s goals with their needs and challenges.
Finally, on November 29, the team installed partial spat collectors in carefully selected areas within Taguines Lagoon. This milestone marks a significant step in monitoring mussel spat settlement and laying the groundwork for improved seedstock management.
These activities were made possible through the collaboration and support of the local government, fisherfolk, and stakeholders. The E-GeMSS Project remains committed to fostering sustainable aquaculture practices and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities through innovative research and community-driven initiatives.
