On January 13, 2024, the Mindanao State University at Naawan Institute for Peace and Development (MSUN IPDM), in collaboration with the Local Government of Naawan (LGU of Naawan), GROW Talabaan Technical Working Group (GROW Talabaan TWG), MSUN-Supreme Student Council (MSUN SSC), Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Naawan Misamis Oriental (SK), Local Youth Development Council of Naawan (LYDC of Naawan), Kaamulan Ho Tribu Ta Lubilan (KATRIBU), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) came together for a joint tree planting activity at Mt. Malindawag.
Mt. Malindawag, located in Barangay Lubilan, Naawan, Misamis Oriental, is a thriving forest with an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, covering an area of over 900 hectares. This mountain is a crucial water source for the rivers in the Barangays of Lubilan and Tagbalogo, providing potable water and irrigation for rice fields. Unfortunately, these forested areas have been under threat due to unregulated human activities. Mt. Malindawag also houses the Higaunon communities and the Talabaan Watershed of the municipality.
Driven by a shared objective to protect and conserve Mt. Malindawag, various stakeholders have developed plans that promote sustainability, accountability, and participatory decision-making. The presence of esteemed individuals such as Hon. Vice Mayor Allan Roa, Hon. Jaime Roa (Committee Chair on Environment), and Hon. Connie Saturno (Indigenous People Mandatory Representative) has provided a platform for different agencies to discuss future initiatives for Mt. Malindawag.
This activity symbolizes harmony with nature, embodying the principle of holistic coexistence between humanity and the environment. It aims to improve wildlife habitat connectivity and support biodiversity, ultimately working for the common good of the entire community of Naawan.
