Mindanao State University at Naawan, in collaboration with PH1920/Shunammite Child Learning Center (SCLC) and with generous funding support from Compassion, officially launched the Honoring Our Planet through Environmental Stewardship (HOPES) Project on April 9, 2025, in Barangay Magoong, Linamon, Lanao del Norte.
The HOPES Project is a community-based initiative designed to inspire and empower PH1920/SCLC stakeholders and nearby communities to take an active role in environmental care and stewardship, while fostering sustainable ways of living through practical, grassroots actions. The project aims to promote a culture of environmental responsibility, food security, and ecological resilience.
Representing MSU at Naawan was Dr. Aida Dadole-Perpetua, Director of the DARES Center, who expressed the university's strong commitment and support to the successful implementation of the project. She was joined by Harry Kenn T. De La Rosa of the DARES Center and faculty members of the College of Environment and Life Sciences—Russel D. Bañoc, Crisologo A. Tagupa, and Shirah Y. Cimafranca—who facilitated the conduct of the Training Needs and Gap Assessment. This assessment served as a critical step in identifying appropriate interventions for implementing organic and backyard gardening as well as fruit tree planting and growing.
PH1920/SCLC was represented by Assistant Pastor Russelle Jean Alia, who affirmed their commitment to closely collaborate with MSU at Naawan and all stakeholders in carrying out the various components of the project. Meanwhile, PH1920 Project Director Aljoy Quiroga extended heartfelt appreciation to MSU at Naawan for its invaluable partnership in building environmentally conscious and resilient communities.
The activity concluded with a coordination meeting between MSU at Naawan and the PH1920/SCLC core group, where they discussed the scheduling and implementation of the HOPES Project’s key activities. These include a Zero Waste Forum, Coastal Clean-up Drives, and the establishment of organic backyard gardening for vegetable production and fruit tree growing. These initiatives are scheduled for roll-out throughout April and May 2025 and are expected to garner support from the local government unit, civic organizations, and relevant government agencies.
Through the HOPES Project, MSU at Naawan and PH1920/SCLC uphold their shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The launch of the HOPES Project marks a significant step in mobilizing community participation, inter-institutional collaboration, and long-term commitment toward protecting the environment and nurturing sustainable futures.
