To promote deeper knowledge and broaden awareness on Republic Act 11313, also known as the Bawal Bastos Law, the Gender and Development (GAD) Office and the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) of Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) organized “A Seminar on the Safe Spaces Act” on August 28, 2024, at the MSUN Function House. The activity gathered employees and student leaders as part of the MSU System Peace Day celebration.
Esteemed resource speaker Atty. Jasmin B. Abrea, Sangguniang Bayan Secretary of the Municipality of Naawan, delivered an insightful and comprehensive discussion on the Safe Spaces Act. She explained the penalties for violations, identified the offices where victims may seek assistance, and outlined the proper steps to take when experiencing sexual harassment. She also emphasized the importance of empowering individuals who may be hesitant to pursue complaints due to fear or intimidation.
Through this seminar, GAD and IPDM aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of their rights and responsibilities, provide practical strategies for fostering a safer and more inclusive environment, and highlight the vital role of community awareness and collective action in preventing and addressing harassment.
