On August 1, 2025, the MSU at Naawan Research and Extension Ethics Section conducted a Basic Research Ethics Orientation aimed at strengthening ethical oversight and cultivating a responsible research culture among faculty, staff, and student researchers.
Through engaging lectures, open discussions, and expert guidance, participants gained deeper insights into key areas of ethical research. The session on general principles of ethical research emphasized integrity, accountability, and transparency as the foundation of credible scholarship. Discussions on responsible data management highlighted the importance of accuracy, confidentiality, and proper handling of research data to ensure reliability and trust. The topic on the ethical use of AI underscored the need for responsible innovation, addressing concerns on bias, authorship, and academic integrity.
Equally important, the session on avoiding research misconduct reinforced the critical role of honesty by addressing issues such as plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification. Specialized discussions on ethics involving human participants stressed informed consent, privacy, and protection of vulnerable groups; animal ethics highlighted humane treatment and adherence to welfare standards; while environmental ethics emphasized sustainability, conservation, and responsible engagement with ecosystems and communities.
The program opened with remarks from Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, PhD, and featured expert speakers including Richelle A. Niepes, MSc; Charizze Jean A. Yana, RN, MAN; Dr. Wenceslao A. Coronado; Jovelyn L. Cabanatan, MA; Ramon Francisco Q. Padilla, MSc; and Jessa B. Solis, who guided participants through the ethics review application process, an essential step in ensuring compliance and accountability in research.
The training concluded with closing remarks by Sir Edgar Castañares, leaving participants empowered with knowledge and a renewed commitment to uphold research integrity. This initiative underscores MSU at Naawan’s strong commitment to fostering ethical, responsible, and impactful research that contributes to national development while upholding the highest standards of integrity.
