A delegation of 13 esteemed faculty members from Caraga State University (CSU) College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, spearheaded by Prof. Henson M. Dejarme, dean of the college, and Prof. Romell A. Seronay, Extension Director of CSU, engaged in a benchmarking activity at the Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) on February 21, 2024.
They were welcomed by the College of Marine and Allied Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Jesrael B. Palco; Department Chairperson Asst. Prof. Lovella R. Calala; and Graduate Program Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Emilie G. Tubio.
Further, the visit was prompted by the keen interest of Caraga State University in adopting best practices and effective program implementations employed by MSUN. BS in Marine Biology Program Proposal Chairperson took the lead in inquiring and learning about the successful methodologies employed by MSUN in Marine Biology and Marine Science.
The decision to benchmark at MSUN was solidified by the institution's recognition by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Development in Marine Science and its Level 1 accreditation by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP).
Caraga State University is contemplating the introduction of a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, and the benchmarking activity at MSUN is deemed essential in shaping the proposed program. The insights gained from MSUN's successful practices are expected to play a crucial role in the development and implementation of Caraga State University's new academic venture.
Post-meeting, the Caraga State University faculty explored the Research Division of MSUN, focusing particularly on the Sea Cucumber Hatchery and Museum. Dr. Wilfredo H. Uy, underscored the institution's recognition as the Niche Center in the Region (NICER) for Sea Cucumber Research and Development. He shed light on the biological, ecological, and commercial significance of sea cucumbers, emphasizing their pivotal role in marine ecosystems.
The academic exchange culminated with a courtesy call to MSUN Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Prof. Renoir A. Abrea, where discussions centered around potential future collaborations between CSU and MSUN. The meeting explored avenues for joint research initiatives, student exchange programs, and other collaborative efforts that would mutually benefit both institutions.
Finally, the benchmarking activity signifies a forward-looking approach towards academic excellence and program innovation, with a focus on leveraging the expertise and achievements of MSUN in Marine Biology. This collaboration is anticipated to pave the way for pioneering advancements in the field.
