Local Government Units (LGUs) play a vital role in managing and guiding local development through various strategies, including supporting entrepreneurs to create jobs and income opportunities within their communities. As primary stakeholders, LGUs serve as active partners of the Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubation (ATBI) program. With their close proximity to the grassroots and deep understanding of community dynamics, constituent needs, and local aspirations, their collaboration with the ATBI becomes a strong catalyst for rural and social progress.
The Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) ATBI aims to expand its engagement with agri-aqua-based technology innovators and startup enterprises in the province by strengthening partnerships with LGUs. This collaboration helps identify potential incubatees for the business incubation program while contributing to the LGUsโ community and economic development goals. On March 13โ14, 2024, the MSUN ATBI team, led by Prof. Karem A. Palmes, visited the LGUs of Libertad and Gitagum. During the visit, the team met with municipal leaders, agriculturists, and business development heads to introduce the MSUN ATBI Center and raise awareness about its programs and services, foster partnership interest, and scout for potential takers of the MSUN ATBI program within the municipalities.
These engagements resulted in the identification of agri-aqua enterprises and cooperatives that had previously received support from agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). A seaweed stick producer from Gimaylan, Libertad, and a cooperative producing citronella essential oil in Gitagum were among the enterprises showing strong potential for growth and innovation, making them ideal candidates for ATBI assistance. To help advance their development, the ATBI will organize an information drive and conduct technology needs assessments (TNA) for these associations and other prospective program participants. The MSUN ATBI expresses its sincere appreciation to the municipal heads and agriculturists of Libertad and Gitagum, Hon. Emmanuel S. Mugot and Hon. Leonardo L. Uy, for their warm hospitality and invaluable support during the visit.
