MSU at Naawan students demonstrate resourcefulness through an upcycling initiative at the Boys’ Dormitory area.
Students of Mindanao State University at Naawan continue to show how creativity and resourcefulness can contribute to a more sustainable and student-friendly campus.
Through the initiative of the Environment and Life Sciences Students Alliance (ELSSA) and FLORESTA, students transformed spare wood and other reusable materials into functional chairs, tables, and a simple tambayan or waiting area near the Boys’ Dormitory.
Rather than allowing usable materials to go to waste, the students gave them a second purpose by turning discarded and surplus resources into facilities that can benefit the campus community. The activity promotes responsible use of materials while demonstrating practical ways of reducing waste through reuse and upcycling.
Beyond improving the physical space, the initiative also reflects the value of student participation in creating a more inclusive and comfortable learning environment. The newly developed area provides students with a place to rest, interact, and spend time between classes and other university activities.
The project highlights how small, community-driven actions can contribute to broader efforts toward environmental responsibility, sustainable consumption, and the development of safer and more welcoming campus spaces.
Through initiatives such as this, MSU at Naawan students demonstrate that meaningful change does not always require large-scale projects, sometimes, it begins with recognizing the potential in materials that others might simply throw away.
